“Relaxation, massage, and various kinds of body therapy can bring major temporary respite by freeing muscles and connective tissue from the pressure of repressed emotions, by easing tension and thus relieving pain. But this pressure will reassert itself if we refuse to identify the causes of these emotions, if the child within us still harbors a strong anticipation of punishment, and if, for that reason, we fear angering our parents or the persons who have taken their place.
Equally ineffectual in the long term are the frequently recommended exercises of ‘letting out’ or ‘working off’ our anger by means of such expedients as pillow fights or boxing, as long as we are forced to take a lenient attitude to those persons who caused our anger in the first place. Laura tried out many such exercises, invariably with short-lived success.”
